Newspapers, magazines, and phonebooks seem more likely each year to be found in a museum than on a desk as computers and mobile devices take over as the most effective tool for reaching consumers. Yet, some companies still cling to print advertising with varying degrees of success. So is print advertising truly a thing of the past?<br /> <br /> It’s no secret that print advertising is exponentially more expensive than most forms of online marketing, for businessmen and women on both sides of the table. For publishers, the cost comparison of a print publication vs. an e-magazine or online news feed doesn’t even come close, and advertisers can save thousands by advertising on websites and mobile apps, while also gaining a more extensive reach.<br /> <br /> Print marketing also has a lower conversion rate, especially when cost per conversion is taken into account. While some prime online ad placements can reach costs similar to magazine or newspaper placements, for those in most industries print is less targeted, and it is usually more difficult to track results and adjust accordingly. You also pay for print advertising regardless of your results; even if a person never looks at your ad, you’ve already paid for that placement. With online marketing, on the other hand, you usually pay for conversion – and if not, there are at least ways to track how many people are actually looking at your advertisements in most cases.<br /> <br /> For these reasons and more, many are quick to suggest that print marketing has not only lost its stronghold, but is fading away altogether. In marketing, however, there is rarely death – only change. I don’t believe print is dead, or that it ever will be. However, to be successful in print marketing, you must recognize how it has changed and how you need to adapt as a result.<br /> <br /> There are a few reasons why print will continue to thrive, even if it remains more expensive than other marketing channels. One of the more obvious is that for whatever reason, a majority of people still prefer reading print material as opposed to reading off of a screen. A large portion of the population will always prefer a book in their hand, a card on their desk, or a flyer posted on a wall as opposed to an email or pop-up on their screen. This is partly due to the fact that people are bombarded by non-print ads all day. Some of the more recent studies on average daily screen time suggest that most Americans spend as much as 8 hours a day looking at a screen – be it a computer, tablet, mobile phone, or television. When a person spends up to a third of their day looking at a screen, print materials stand out.<br /> <br /> The preference for print is actually so prominent that many people retain more information when they read from a page rather than a screen. Our tech-heavy society trains people to scan a screen for the most relevant information, not to read every word on the page (this is part of the reason search engines prefer keywords to be used early on in content). While this is starting to translate to other marketing mediums (have you tried reading a textbook lately? It gets more difficult the more time you spend looking at a screen), it still holds that many people are more inclined to read printed words than words on a screen…<br /> <br /> … Another reason print marketing isn’t going anywhere is because it is so expensive. You read that right – the same reason that has been proposed for why print is dying is actually a reason it will remain alive and well. As print becomes so expensive, less business are going to be able to afford to use it. With so many more cost-effective options available, print ads will become unrealistic for a lot of smaller businesses. As the pool of print advertisers thins, it will become easier to stand out using print marketing – those who can afford to market using print media, and who can afford to do it well, won’t have as much competition for their readers’ attention. Again, print isn’t dying, it is changing – and businesses are going to have to change as well…<br /> <br /> … One last aspect of print marketing I want to focus on draws from the quote at the beginning of this chapter. Print may not be the most effective marketing channel for gaining new clients and customers, especially if you are seeking to connect with the masses rather than a few specific people. However, print marketing is still an exceptional client retention tool. It’s easier to miss a short email reminder than it is to miss that postcard reminder from your dentist, and the same applied to businesses in all kinds of industries. I worked briefly at a company that followed up every meeting with a handwritten note, in addition to any email follow-up or phone call that was made. While this might not be feasible for larger businesses, print marketing of any kind can have the same effect. Even if you can’t afford to use print to connect with new clients or customers, you should be using it to reconnect with those you have worked with in the past.<br /> <br /> So print definitely is not dead, nor is it dying, but it is changing significantly. People are becoming used to more targeted marketing, and print ads should reflect that preference. Personalization is huge, and will begin to stand out even more as smaller businesses realize just how much more costly print marketing can be.<br /> <br /> Every business still needs print, in varying degrees, depending on their specific budget. At the very least, companies should be focusing on making their print advertisements better for retaining clients and following up with solid leads, using this more expensive marketing medium to focus on the select few people that are most likely to give them their business. If you can afford to use print marketing for the masses, still make an effort to utilize variable printing and target your best prospects before focusing on pursuing huge lists of leads.<br /> <br /> Stop viewing print as a medium competing with online marketing for your money, and instead see print as a powerful companion to online marketing. Integrate your social media profiles and your website into your print marketing strategies, so that every ad you produce, online or offline, directs people to further contact.<br /> <br /> Lastly, like any other modern marketing strategy, analysis is key to print marketing. It is far more difficult to track conversions from print marketing, which is another reason why integration is so key. You can’t tell how many people look at your print ads, but you can track how many visit a link via a QR code or come to your website without a search engine referral. Analyzing the effectiveness of print marketing campaigns will help you adapt and make print more cost-effective.<br /> <br /> Print isn’t dead – but emulating Don Draper won’t cut it as print continues to change. Not a single worker should die in the workplace, even when a fire breaks out," KMU said.<br /> <br /> The labor rights group also cited previous fires that took the lives of workers during the Aquino administration.<br /> <br /> A fire killed 17 employees of Novo Jeans and Shorts in Butuan City in 2012, while another claimed the lives of eight workers of Asia Micro Tech in Pasay last year.<br /> <br /> As of this posting, the Valenzuela fire death toll stood at 72.<br /> <br /> Related: Valenzuela mourns as more bodies found in gutted factory<br /> <br /> Assistance to survivors, victims' families<br /> DOLE reassured the public that it would provide support for the fire survivors and for the families who lost breadwinners to the tragedy.<br /> <br /> "The DOLE, through its Employment Compensation Commission, is ready to provide whatever assistance may be necessary, including employees' compensation program benefits, to the families of the victims as well as to the survivors of the fire," said Dimapilis-Baldoz.<br /> <br /> Baldoz added that P20,000 in funeral and death pension benefits will be given to families of those who died in the fire, depending on the late worker's salary and Social Security System details.<br /> <br /> Hospitalization and rehabilitation benefits and lump sum compensation will also be given to survivors, depending on the extent of their injuries.<br /> <br /> According to the DOLE, Kentex Maunfacturing Corp. had a total of 54 workers — 33 of whom were members of the company's union. It also has a Bulacan-based subcontractor.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, officials of Valenzuela declared a citywide state of mourning on the afternoon of Thursday. Retrieval operations were also carried out by the Scene of the Crime Operatives but was suspended at 3:09 p.m.<br /> <br /> The Palace and DOLE also extended condolences to the families of the fire victims. How can I get one? What are its benefits?” I’ve been encountering these kind of questions quite a lot these past few days from my friends who have a disability, a chronic illness or are taking care of someone with special needs. I realized that my friends aren’t the only people who need the information about it and so I decided to share with you the purpose and requirements for a PWD ID.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: large;">If you are a Pinoy PWD, you have the right to a couple of benefits and special privileges mandated by the law. PWD Identification Cards shall be issued to any bonafide PWD with permanent disabilities due to any one or more of the following conditions: psychosocial, chronic illness, learning, mental, visual, orthopedic, speech and hearing conditions. This includes persons suffering from disabling diseases resulting to their limitations to do day-to-day activities as normally as possible. This definition is interesting in that it implies reputation is based on perception and not fact.   Everyday we are inundated with news headlines of how a company or an individual has loss their reputation (here the assumption is that the lost reputation was a good one) and the negative impact that loss has had on the company and/or individual. How then do you protect reputation if reputation is someone else’s beliefs or opinions? We live in a society where everyone is considered worthy of having their own opinions although we do not need to all agree with it. So why are we so concerned that the opinions they have of our company, its products and/or services, or of us are positive? Perhaps because in the corporate world, according to a recent IBM study on representational risk, a “strong reputation generates stakeholder trust.[3]” Add to this the knowledge that in today’s digital environment reputation is a fragile thing. As Warren Buffet states: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”<br /> <br /> The first impression of an executive and therefore sometimes the company’s brand can be based on a photo. Most executives will have professionally taken company-approved photographs for their “official” online profiles. What about for their personal accounts? It is interesting to note the phenomenon of online “selfies” – portraits taken of oneself by oneself by turning the camera lens around to face you. A recent New York Times article, My Selfie, Myself, by Jenna Wortham examined why these images are more than just the work of vain individuals[4]. Clive Thompson, a technology writer, is quoted in the article. “People are wrestling with how they appear to the rest of the world. Taking a photograph is a way of trying to understand how people see you, who you are, and what you look like.[5]” But are these the images of the executive the company wants out there?<br /> <br /> Social media platforms have added not only a way to share these photos and other content, but other technology, such as Facebook’s facial recognition, is able to automatically identify individuals in the photos. It is offered as a tool to assist users in captioning their photos, but stalkers can use this tool to identify and locate a potential “executive” target.<br /> <br /> Executives may also choose a graphic or cartoonish visual representation. Or the executive may be taking part in a virtual environment that requires the adoption of an avatar, which is a graphical representation of the executive. These avatars are usually also 3-dimensional. The choices an executive uses to dress his or her avatar may become the basis for the public’s opinion about the executive and therefore about the company. One best practice being adopted by some companies who permit the use of avatars for executives (and employees) is instituting an avatar dress code to reduce the risk of negative public opinion.<br /> <br /> In online communities and forums the avatar may be a simple 2-dimensional icon or even the company’s logo. For the recent update in the algorithm to mobile results, let’s explore the reality of having a responsive site vs having a non-responsive site in a post-mobilgeddon world.<br /> <br /> Google is focusing on the mobile experience for users with this algorithm change. That means sites need to work well for users on tablets and mobile phones. Lawyers may not even realize there is content users have a hard time seeing or that portions of their site are too hard to use on a mobile device. The late Steve Jobs was one of the most notable opponents of the use of Flash in Apple devices[2] (hence the reason Flash is not supported on millions of mobile Apple devices). Despite the fact that content cannot be crawled by search engines and is not supported on millions of popular devices, it is also a technology that needs to be updated or it does not work right.<br /> <br /> Pharrell William’s site is an embarrassing example of a site that does not function on mobile devices. Note that it does not even try to hide that fact or respond to the device.<br /> <br /> <b>Text Size and Readability: </b>Users should not have to pinch and zoom to read text. All the text on pages should be easily read on a small screen without having to zoom in on the page. That means users should not have to scroll horizontally to take in all the content that is on the page.<br /> <br /> Spacing Among Links and Buttons: Users have a hard time with mobile sites where the links and/or buttons are too close together or too small. There is nothing more frustrating that going to click on a link and tapping the wrong one on a mobile screen.<br /> <br /> <b>Finding Out Where You Stand</b><br /> <br /> There are a few different ways lawyers can find out if their site leaves something to be desired on mobile.<br /> <br /> Google’s mobile friendly tester: Paste your site into Google’s mobile friendly testing tool and see if it passes or not. If it does great but if not, Google will tell you exactly what is wrong and provide information on how to fix it. Keep in mind Google’s report is only for the URL you have input into the tool. If your site is a CMS (i.e. WordPress, Joomla, Umbraco, Orhcard, Drupal or something similar, pages are templates and any issues should be site-wide). If you do not have a CMS, you will want to scan all your pages to be safe or use one of the methods below.<br /> Google Webmaster Tools: If you want a more in-depth report on any issues related to mobile, Google’s Webmaster Tools is a great way to get that information. They will show you how many pages are not doing well on the mobile landscape (in contrast the mobile friendliness tool does it one page at a time).<br /> Using your site on a mobile device: This is a little less scientific than the software-based tools but it can give you insight into what your users are experiencing. If you find your site difficult to consume on a mobile device (i.e. using two hands to try and read content, moving all over the screen to see things, having to zoom in to read text, etc) then chances are it needs an upgrade.<br /> Impact on Search Results<br /> <br /> I have seen articles on the web saying that sites not providing a good mobile experience will be removed from mobile results. This simply is not the case and Google makes no mention of removing mobile search results that are related to non-mobile friendly sites. Those that are not mobile friendly however will start feeling the pinch as Google demotes those sites for mobile optimized competitors. In other words you will still show up in search without a mobile optimized site however you will lose ground to those who are already mobile friendly.<br /> <br /> Another thing is that mobile-friendly sites are given that designation in search results. The partners will no longer assign work to the associates and will expect them to generate their own files.<br /> <br /> If you are the associate, this is a chilling moment.<br /> <br /> The key to survival is making the transition from a worker bee lawyer to a rainmaker, which can be done in six steps. Fortunately, business development is a learned skill, and is not necessarily an in-born trait.<br /> <br /> Business development is not a dark art.<br /> A charismatic personality is not required.<br /> It does not require making cold calls or direct pitching. This is a relief because nobody went to law school to become a salesperson.<br /> An associate does not need to fear entering a giant room of unknown people, and expect to find a new client.<br /> Business development is easily done by introverts – me included.<br /> It is a transition, because associates are trained to be worker bees – cranking out billable hours and learning the law. Happily, all the professional skills of a lawyer translate directly into business development skills – such as being organized, analytical, hard-working, a good listener and a skilled questioner.<br /> <br /> Step One<br /> <br /> Associates should begin by building relationships with clients for whom they already work. Knowing a current client well will lead to new business. It all begins, of course, by excelling at legal skills. The next step is to conduct a friendly interview of the client about their business (not their legal work). Clients like lawyers who know their business.<br /> <br /> The interview can be done over breakfast, lunch or at an in-person visit to the client’s office. The point is to learn how the client makes money and which of their activities lead to disputes. A great way to bring up the topic is by attending meeting of a trade association to which the client belongs.<br /> <br /> At the meeting, don’t bring anything with you – no brochure or handouts. Just ask questions and avoid making a pitch. Demonstrate that you are paying attention by taking notes. Give verbal and visual cues that you are interested in what they are saying. This is how you develop a relationship that will cause the client to think of you when someone they know needs a lawyer.<br /> <br /> Step Two<br /> <br /> Market yourself within the firm. Don’t expect the firm to market you – you must take the initiative. Look for other lawyers who want to co-market with you – your best ally may be just down the hall. When it comes to business development, identify a partner who has a practice that you want. Learn how the partner built their practice. Find a way to make yourself useful to that partner and request that you join them on informal meetings with clients. As Yogi Berra said, “You can observe a lot by just watching.”<br /> <br /> Step Three<br /> <br /> Build your network outside the firm and start now with your current contacts. Reflect about all the people you’ve gotten to know since childhood, college and law school and target the movers and shakers. Get to know your counterparts at your clients –they may be junior executives now, but one day they will move up the ranks. These are the people who will lead you to new clients.<br /> <br /> Spend time with these people – everybody has time for a cup of coffee on the way to work. Learn what they do for fun and suggest an outing together so that you can really connect with them. Multiply your opportunities by introducing one contact to another.<br /> <br /> Look for the gaps in your network and fill them in. If you know a lot of other lawyers, financial advisers and real estate brokers, make it a point to get to know more business owners, association leaders or executive executive recruiters.<br /> <br /> One of the best ways to generate business is public speaking. Being the speaker in front of a room makes you an authority. Because I am an introvert myself, this was hard for me at first. But I made a point of attending many speeches at conferences and studying the techniques of engaging speakers, and incorporating them into my own repertoire. Once I developed confidence, I volunteered to speak at meetings of clients and was always impressed how effective a public speech is at developing new work.<br /> <br /> Step Four<br /> <br /> Today, the vast majority of potential clients will check out a lawyer’s website before retaining the law firm. This means you must tune up all your bios – on the firm website, LinkedIn and Google+ to attract clients. (This is part of the “Eureka Method” which I describe at http://bitly.com/EurekaMethod). Emphasize the points that clients are looking for:<br /> <br /> Familiarity with particular industries.<br /> A representative list of clients you’ve worked for.<br /> The results you’ve obtained.<br /> An effective bio should be 300 words maximum. Skip the boilerplate about where you’re admitted and the bar associations you belong to, and instead focus on client service – describe how well you explain options to clients. It helps to include just a little personal information – especially if it’s charitable work or an activity that other people can identify with.<br /> <br /> Step Five<br /> <br /> It is essential to join an organization of clients. You goal is to be visible in the organization, not warm a chair. Accordingly, pick a single organization that you will “major” in – don’t make the mistake of joining lots of organizations, or your efforts will be spread thin. A good way to pick a group is to ask clients which meetings they go to.<br /> <br /> Your mission is to get on the Board of Directors – because everybody in the organization knows who they are. Start by asking the president for a chore you can do for them. The president will reward you with an appointment. Once you get on a committee, your goal is to become the chair. Another way to start is to offer to write for the newsletter, with the goal of becoming the editor. Again, offer to speak to the group – with the goal of becoming the program chair.<br /> <br /> Step Six<br /> <br /> Get active on an online social network. You are probably all over Facebook and Instagram, but this time it’s different: you are being active for business development purposes. The best place to start is on LinkedIn, which you can demonstrate your expertise in many ways:<br /> <br /> Write an article and publish it as part of your profile.<br /> Record a quick video at your desk about a hot legal topic (See: “Super-Easy Way to Create YouTube Videos Right at Your Computer” at http://bit.ly/1HxWHX3).<br /> Join a LinkedIn group that your clients belong to. Start by commenting or amplifying other people’s posts, and graduate to submitting a post yourself.<br /> Contact the owner of the group and volunteer to be a moderator (I’ve done this in several groups).<br /> Get to know other people in the group and keep track of them.<br /> Yes, you can<br /> <br /> It may feel overwhelming as you start your journey to becoming a rainmaker. But if you approach it one step at a time and break things down into specific activities, you’ll start to get results. The trick is to prune away other activities that you have and treat business development just like billable work.
